Welcome to read Journey into Science!

A scientist making measurements

Hi, I’m Jasmin Nevala, a PhD researcher at the University of Jyväskylä, funded by Kone Foundation. I began my doctoral project in March 2024, studying how low-frequency magnetic fields affect plants, under the supervision of Lecturer Minna-Maarit Kytöviita (JYU) and Professor Jonne Naarala (UEF).

I hold an MSc in ecology and evolutionary biology. For my Master’s thesis, I investigated plant self-recognition. That project strengthened my interest in plant behavior and the often surprising ways plants interact with their environment.

Because I also love writing, I started this blog to share my PhD journey: the science I do, the principles of research, and the ups and downs along the way.

Outside the lab, I’m endlessly curious. I enjoy drawing, making art, and getting lost in sci-fi and fantasy worlds. I love plants, robots, dinosaurs, mysterious castles, and—yes—Furbys and Pikachus too. I’m calm and friendly, and while I enjoy people’s company, I also cherish time alone to explore ideas and create things independently.
